Prima Queen / Milk Teeth / Single Review

Lyrics are possibly the strongest layer in the song, quite relatable, with subtle metaphors intertwined with realistic images of everyday life.

All-female indie/alternative rock band Prima Queen is an interesting up and coming transatlantic project. Formed in 2016 by best friends Louise Macphail and Kristin McFadden, respectively from Bristol and Chicago, the band, completed by Heledd Owen (drums) and Kitty Drummond (bass), is now in full swing.

Their mellow but catchy single Milk Teeth is an exciting debut. A refreshing song, somewhere between alternative rock and dream pop, Milk Teeth tells the tale of a broken heart in a peculiar, original way.

The track deals with the fleeting nature of relationships, and capture the feelings of confusion and loss in a very raw, emotional way. The sound is all about combining youthful energy with timeless heartfelt lyrics, which anybody could easily connect with.

In the opening lines, we quickly get to understand that a love affair is over by picturing a lonely girl in bed, with cold feet now that her lover’s gone. In its simplicity, this “medias res” opening verse sets the tone and the theme of the song in a clever way so that the listener is instantly caught by the story.

Lyrics are possibly the strongest layer in the song, quite relatable, with subtle metaphors intertwined with realistic images of everyday life. The song explores, in an ethereal but resolute way, the little quirks, habits, and feelings developing in a relationship.

The production of Milk Teeth is simple and straight to the point, featuring a smart structure that builds up to the second chorus and then gets back to a softer mood in the closing verse.

Prima Queen girls are undoubtedly exceptional songwriters, able to deliver strong images and investigate deep themes through their lyrics. Together, they managed to establish a sound that’s filled with vivid storytelling and a hint of nostalgia. Fans of artists like Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, and Courtney Barnett are definitely going to connect with Prima Queen’s unfaltering vision and lyrical content. It is pretty remarkable, especially when considering their very young age.

With a busy schedule of summer live performances around London and the United Kingdom, Prima Queen are ready to enchant us with their light energy, delicate hooks, and refined lyricism.
