Birkir Blær / Go On / Single Review

“Go On’s” production seamlessly blends influences from classic soul to contemporary R&B, while maintaining a distinctive touch that is uniquely his own.

Birkir Blær, the Icelandic soul-pop phenom, returns with “Go On,” a track that feels less like a calculated single release and more like a sun-drenched, late-night jam session captured on tape. The 24-year-old, fresh from his Swedish Idol triumph, lays down a groove that seamlessly blends indie-pop sensibilities with a deep, pulsating funk backbone, all while channeling the spirit of contemporary soul.

The bassline is a living, breathing entity, slinking and popping with a seductive sway. The layered instrumentation, from the subtle guitar licks to the crisp, punchy drums, creates a rich sonic landscape that invites you to move. It’s a sonic tapestry woven from the threads of his diverse influences – you can hear the echoes of Donny Hathaway‘s warmth, Bruno Mars’s infectious energy, and a subtle nod to Daniel Caesar‘s smooth delivery.

From the very first notes, Go On is drenched in conviction. Blær’s velvety vocals, reminiscent of his idols Otis Redding and Donny Hathaway, glide effortlessly over the lush, self-produced arrangement. The track, written at the Icelandic writing camp Airsongs, exudes a collaborative spirit, featuring contributions from Baldvin Hlynsson, Halldór Gunnar Pálsson, and Blær’s own brother, Hreinn Orri Óðinsson.  Mixed by Sæþór Kristjánsson and mastered by Glenn Schick, “Go On” carries a polished yet organic sound, striking the perfect balance between studio refinement and live-session warmth.

Lyrically, the song is a declaration of self-assurance. He confronts the naysayers, the ones who try to mold him into their image, with a defiant, yet almost nonchalant, “You’ll never change me into someone else,” he sings with unwavering determination– Blær’s voice, a smooth, soulful instrument capable of both vulnerability and strength. ” The lyrics, “You say I’m just a dreamer trying to pull me down to earth. No thanks, do me a favor, re-enact, sign all my words,” are a direct, unapologetic rebuttal to those who seek to stifle his individuality.

The repetition of “Go on, give it a try” becomes a mantra, a challenge thrown back at those who doubt him. It’s not aggressive but rather a confident assertion of his own path. This is not about anger but about self-respect. “No, I’m not a puppet. I’m not a figurehead that you can control,” he sings, highlighting the feeling of being pressured to conform. It’s a relatable sentiment, delivered with a soulful conviction that resonates.

Blær’s desire to let his music speak for him is evident in every note. “Go On” showcases his artistic vision, a blend of influences and experiences filtered through his unique perspective. It’s a track that invites you to groove, to reflect, and to ultimately embrace your own individuality. As Blær continues to carve out his path in the industry, one thing is clear: he’s letting his own rhythm guide him and he’s not looking back. And neither should we. The track is out on all digital streaming platforms on April 4th 2025.
